Your home is an important investment. So, for your convenience, we have prepared the following information to help you select a reputable contractor.
There are many different types of contractors, each of which requires a separate specialty license from the State of California. In addition, if the work you are considering is valued at $500.00 or more, a valid California Contractor’s license is required.
You should always follow these steps before allowing a contractor to begin work on your home.
- Contact the California State Contractor’s License Board at: 800-321-2752 or www.cslb.ca.gov
-
- Give them the contractor’s license number. Ask the name on the license - it must be the same name under which the contractor is working. It is illegal for a contractor to use another contractor’s license just as it is for someone to use another’s drivers license. REMEMBER: A LICENSE NUMBER APPEARING ON A BID DOES NOT ASSURE YOU THAT THE LICENSE IS VALID.
-
- Ask the specialty classification of the license. You do not want to hire a plumbing contractor to hook up your electrical outlets.
-
- Ask if the license is valid and in good standing. Be sure that there are no outstanding complaints or license suspensions.
- Make sure the contractor has both Workers Compensation and General Liability Insurance.
This is important for you because, if a worker is injured while working on your property and the contractor does not have insurance, the homeowner is the one who will be liable. Ask to see certificates proving insurance coverage.
- Evaluate the Sales Representative.
- Was he or she on time for the appointment? If punctuality is not important to them in the beginning, it probably won’t be important once the work begins.
- Was he or she courteous and professional? Unprofessional behavior by the salesperson often reflects what you can expect from the rest of the company.
- Was he or she knowledgeable about the products and services you discussed? An uninformed salesperson may overlook critical details which could cause significant delays and additional costs.
- Do you feel comfortable with him or her? Was the work explained to you in detail? Be wary of contractors who only provide a brief or general description of what you can expect.
